Niger Mutiny: Military Junta Regains Control After Major Security Crisis

Niamey, Niger: Niger’s military government says it has regained control of a major military base in the capital, Niamey, after a mutiny by soldiers posed the most serious internal challenge to the junta since it seized power in 2023.

The unrest began around strategic military facilities in Niamey and later spread toward key government locations. Government forces eventually pushed the mutinous soldiers back and restored control of the affected areas.

The crisis has raised fresh questions about the stability of the military government led by General Abdourahamane Tiani.

Reports indicate that dissatisfaction among some soldiers is linked to the continuing fight against jihadist groups and concerns about military casualties and conditions.

Russian Africa Corps personnel reportedly assisted Nigerien forces in regaining control of the military base, highlighting Niger’s growing security relationship with Russia.
