NIAMEY, Niger — Niger is facing a new security and political challenge after mutinous soldiers attacked sensitive locations in the capital, Niamey, including the airport and areas around the presidential complex.
The incident on Saturday was marked by gunfire and explosions and briefly disrupted state television and radio broadcasts.
Niger’s Defence Ministry later said government forces were working to regain control of the affected locations. However, reports indicated that the situation remained uncertain for several hours.
The development represents a serious challenge for military leader Abdourahamane Tiani, who came to power following the 2023 military coup.
Niger has struggled with jihadist violence despite the military government’s promise to improve national security. The latest internal military tension could further complicate the country’s fight against armed extremist groups.
Niger has also undergone major foreign-policy changes since the coup, moving away from Western partners and strengthening relations with Russia. It is now part of the Alliance of Sahel States alongside Mali and Burkina Faso.
