Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure is set for major investment after the Transmission Company of Nigeria secured more than $1.4 billion in loans and grants to support expansion of the national grid.
The funding is expected to help increase transmission capacity, improve reliability and address some of the infrastructure limitations affecting electricity supply.
Recent improvements have increased transformer capacity across the transmission network, but ageing equipment, vandalism and operational challenges remain major concerns.
The investment is therefore being viewed as an important step towards building a stronger electricity system capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing population and economy.
However, experts say sustained investment, proper maintenance and protection of critical infrastructure will be necessary if the country is to achieve long-term improvements in power supply.
