Burkina Faso Strengthens Russia Partnership as Traoré Seeks New Investment and Energy Deals

OUAGADOUGOU — Burkina Faso is moving closer to Russia as the West African country seeks new partnerships in energy, technology, investment and trade.

The relationship between the two countries has increasingly moved beyond political and security cooperation, with both sides exploring wider economic opportunities.

A Russia-Burkina Faso intergovernmental commission on economic, scientific and technical cooperation is expected to provide a platform for discussions around potential projects and investment opportunities.

For Burkina Faso, the relationship fits into President Ibrahim Traoré’s broader strategy of reducing dependence on traditional foreign partners.

Energy is one of the key areas of interest as the landlocked country works to improve access to reliable electricity. Technology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and industrial development are also areas where cooperation could expand.

The growing partnership comes as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger continue to reshape their foreign relations following their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States and the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States.

Russia has presented itself as a willing partner for the three military-led governments.

For Burkina Faso, the major question will be whether the growing diplomatic relationship can translate into tangible investment, jobs, infrastructure and improved living conditions.
