KINSHASA — The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached another worrying stage, with more than 5,500 cases now reported.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, was declared in May in the northeastern Ituri Province.
The World Health Organisation has classified the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, highlighting the need for countries and health organisations to work together to contain the disease.
The rapid rise in cases has placed additional pressure on health workers and communities already dealing with limited medical resources.
Health authorities are increasing surveillance, treatment and public health measures in affected areas.
The situation is being closely monitored because of the possibility of further transmission, particularly in communities where healthcare access is limited.
The outbreak is now among the most serious Ebola emergencies faced by the country in recent years.
