MEKELLE, Ethiopia — Fresh concerns about a possible return to war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region have emerged after a drone strike injured at least 13 people in the regional capital, Mekelle.
The attack reportedly occurred early Thursday in a residential area.
A hospital official said five children were among those injured.
The incident comes amid growing tensions between Ethiopia’s federal government and forces in Tigray.
The region was devastated by a two-year conflict that ended with a peace agreement in 2022.
Residents have now expressed concern that renewed military activity could threaten the fragile peace that followed the conflict.
Tigrayan authorities reported damage to homes in the area hit by the strike.
The latest incident is being closely watched because of the region’s history of conflict and the potential consequences of any major escalation.
For communities that have already suffered years of war, the renewed tensions are causing fresh anxiety.
