ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria is facing another controversy over the existence of an allegedly fake government agency operating from government premises.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation into the National Brands Development and Made in Nigeria Special Project Office, which authorities say was operating illegally from a government office.
The development was announced on Friday by Musa Adamu Aliyu, head of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, after he briefed the president in Abuja.
Authorities said the agency was headed by George Buchi Nwabueze. An arrest warrant has reportedly been issued for him.
The discovery came during an investigation into another organisation described by authorities as a fake government agency — the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council.
That earlier investigation reportedly led investigators to the second organisation.
Three senior government officials have also been suspended as the investigation continues.
The latest development is likely to increase public scrutiny of government structures and the systems used to monitor agencies operating under the federal government.
Authorities are now expected to determine how the organisation was established, who authorised its activities and whether public funds were accessed.
The case has also raised wider questions about possible weaknesses in government oversight and the risk of individuals using the names of government institutions for personal gain.
