2027 POLITICS: CAMPAIGN SEASON OPENS AS TINUBU SEEKS SECOND TERM

ABUJA — Nigeria’s political temperature is rising as the country enters the campaign season ahead of the 2027 general election.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seeking another term in office under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC. The ruling party is already positioning its achievements in the economy as a major part of its campaign message.

But the road to 2027 will not be easy.

The Tinubu administration has introduced major economic changes since taking office, including the removal of petrol subsidy and reforms to the foreign exchange market. While the government says the measures were necessary to rebuild the economy, many Nigerians are still dealing with high food prices, transport costs and pressure on household income.

Security is also expected to be a major issue during the election.

The opposition parties are trying to build a strong challenge to the APC, but disagreements over leadership and the search for a single presidential candidate remain a major problem.

Several opposition figures and presidential hopefuls have already started making their positions known.

The signing of a National Peace Accord by some major political figures has also added to the focus on how the 2027 election will be conducted.

For Nigerians, however, the biggest question may not be about political promises. Many voters are expected to judge the government based on what they see in their homes and communities — food prices, jobs, security, electricity and the value of the naira.

With the campaign season now gathering pace, the 2027 election is set to become one of Nigeria’s biggest political battles in years.
