Nigeria Rules Out Return to Petrol Subsidies, Finance Minister Says

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has ruled out a return to petrol subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates.

Oyedele made the position clear on Saturday, 17 October, amid renewed debate over economic policy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The government’s position means it intends to maintain the removal of petrol subsidies and continue with its foreign exchange market reforms.

However, fuel prices and transport costs remain major concerns for households and businesses. Higher transport expenses can also increase the cost of food and other essential goods, putting further pressure on family budgets.

Supporters of the reforms argue that removing subsidies can reduce government spending and free up funds for other priorities. Critics, however, continue to point to the burden on citizens and the need for stronger measures to ease the impact.

The debate over how Nigeria should balance public spending, economic reforms and household welfare is likely to remain important as the country approaches the next election cycle.

Monafrika’s Take

Economic reforms should be judged by how they affect people’s lives. If the government intends to maintain its current policies, it must also strengthen support for vulnerable households, improve public transport and reduce the cost of doing business. Nigerians need to see practical improvements in their daily lives.
