Africa CDC Seeks Answers Over More Than $700 Million in Ebola Response Funds

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have called for greater transparency in the management of money allocated to Ebola response efforts.

A report published by Reuters on Friday, October 16, said more than $700 million in donor funding remained unaccounted for in the financial information available to the authorities.

The concern relates to gaps in financial reporting from organisations that received money intended to support the Ebola response.

The authorities are calling for stronger tracking of funds to establish how the money was allocated, how it was spent, and whether it reached the communities and health facilities that needed assistance.

Africa CDC has previously supported efforts to improve financial tracking and accountability for resources committed to the outbreak response.

The issue is particularly important because the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to face serious public health challenges linked to Ebola. Health workers need adequate resources for disease surveillance, treatment, public awareness, and support for affected communities.

However, the reported funding gap should not automatically be interpreted as proof that money was stolen. Financial records and investigations are needed to establish what happened to the funds and whether there was any misuse.

The latest calls for transparency have placed renewed attention on accountability in the management of international health assistance.

Monafrika’s Take

Money provided for an emergency health response must reach the people who need it. Donors, governments and aid organisations should maintain clear financial records and make spending information available for proper review. Transparent reporting can strengthen public trust and help ensure that resources are used to protect lives.
