Aviation authorities are expected to investigate a serious incident involving a CL60 aircraft operated by Triton Aviation after it reportedly lost a door shortly after take-off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, as the aircraft was departing Abuja for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
According to an air traffic control incident report cited by Nigerian media, the aircraft, registered as T7-SEI and operating under flight identification DWC052, took off at about 4:17 p.m. UTC.
Approximately three nautical miles from the airport, while climbing through 3,000 feet, the crew declared an emergency by transmitting a “Mayday” distress call.
The crew reported that a door had opened during flight and requested assistance. Air traffic controllers directed the aircraft to return to Abuja, while airport fire and medical teams were placed on standby in preparation for its arrival.
The aircraft landed safely on Runway 22 at approximately 4:34 p.m. UTC, around 14 minutes after the distress call.
Following the landing, the duty air traffic controller observed that the door was missing from the aircraft’s fuselage.
In a further development, farmers reportedly discovered the missing door on a farm in Abuja. The discovery raised additional questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
No confirmed information on injuries was included in the initial reports reviewed. The cause of the incident and the circumstances that led to the door separating from the aircraft have yet to be established.
Monafrika’s Take
The safe landing is a relief, but the incident raises serious questions about aircraft safety and maintenance. Aviation authorities should conduct a thorough investigation to establish what happened and determine whether any safety standards were breached.
Passengers depend on airlines and regulators to ensure that aircraft are safe before every flight. Any identified safety failures should be addressed promptly to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
