Rivers Pipeline Explosion Injures 20, Damages About 50 Houses

A gas pipeline explosion in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has reportedly injured at least 20 people and damaged about 50 houses.

The explosion occurred around 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, along Old Bori Road. The affected pipeline was reported to belong to the Nigeria Gas Company.

Several victims were taken to hospitals for treatment. Shops, a mechanic workshop and vehicles were also reportedly damaged by the explosion.

Residents alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for about three weeks before the incident. Daniel Chuma, leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, said he had written to the company and petitioned relevant authorities over the reported leak.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre has called for an investigation to establish the cause of the explosion and identify any failures in safety procedures.

As of Friday morning, the full extent of the damage and the cause of the incident had yet to be independently established.

Monafrika’s Take

The incident highlights the need for stronger safety measures around gas pipelines. Authorities and the pipeline operator should investigate the reported leak, support affected residents and ensure that similar incidents are prevented. Communities should not have to live with unresolved safety concerns.
