Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has launched a new political-military coalition aimed at challenging the government of President Félix Tshisekedi.
The coalition, known as the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), was announced in Goma, eastern DR Congo, on Monday.
The new platform brings together political and armed groups previously associated with the Congo River Alliance, including the M23 rebel movement, which has seized territory in eastern Congo.
The coalition says it intends to coordinate opposition forces and pursue what it describes as the restoration of effective governance in the country.
The announcement comes as eastern DR Congo continues to face insecurity, displacement and tensions involving armed groups and neighbouring countries.
The development could further complicate diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, including negotiations intended to reduce fighting and restore stability.
Kabila, who served as president from 2001 to 2019, has become a prominent opponent of Tshisekedi’s administration. His involvement in the new coalition adds another political dimension to the conflict.
The Kinshasa government faces the challenge of addressing the security situation while pursuing diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the east.
Monafrika’s Take
The formation of the FRN introduces another major development into DR Congo’s already complicated political and security crisis.
Any political initiative that brings armed groups together could affect the course of the conflict and ongoing peace negotiations.
The priority should be protecting civilians, reducing violence and creating conditions for a peaceful political solution. Further escalation would put more lives at risk and deepen the humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo.
