Federal Government says subsidy reform has strengthened Nigeria’s finances
The Federal Government says Nigeria has saved about ₦15.8 trillion since the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The government says the decision has helped reduce the financial pressure created by the subsidy system and provided more resources for other areas of the economy.
Officials have continued to defend the reform despite the hardship it has caused many households.
The removal of the subsidy led to a sharp increase in petrol prices and contributed to higher transportation and living costs across the country.
The government now argues that the money previously spent supporting petrol prices can be redirected towards public services and development.
Recent government figures also indicate that its wider economic reforms generated about ₦20.4 trillion in additional resources between June 2023 and December 2025.
But the big challenge remains how ordinary Nigerians will feel the benefits.
For families struggling with food prices, transport costs and other household expenses, the real measure of the reforms will be whether living conditions improve.
The government says household welfare remains a work in progress.
