2027 Elections: Northern Governors’ Alleged Quiet Opposition Raises Concerns in Tinubu’s Camp

2027 Elections: Northern Governors’ Alleged Quiet Opposition Raises Concerns in Tinubu’s Camp

President Bola Tinubu’s re-election plans are facing fresh political concerns following reports that some governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in northern Nigeria are reluctant to openly support his 2027 ambition.

The reported divisions have raised questions about the level of unity within the ruling party as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.

According to reports, some northern APC governors have allegedly failed to mobilise strong support for Tinubu’s second-term bid, creating concerns among members of the President’s political camp.

The development comes amid growing disagreements between the Presidency and some state governors over party leadership, political appointments and the management of internal disputes.

APC Leadership Moves to Protect Its Electoral Interests

The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has reportedly directed candidates in certain states to submit the names of their proposed polling agents directly to the national secretariat instead of relying on state governors and party structures.

The move is reportedly aimed at reducing the risk of internal sabotage in states where party leaders suspect that some political figures may be supporting rival candidates.

Reports also suggest that disagreements over candidate selection and allegations of governors backing opposition aspirants have contributed to tensions within the APC.

However, these allegations have not been established as proven acts of sabotage, and some of the political figures mentioned in connection with the claims have denied wrongdoing.

Disagreements Deepen Within the Ruling Party

Several issues are reportedly contributing to the strained relationship between the Presidency and some governors.

One is the disagreement over the distribution and management of public funds, including allocations to local governments. The President’s support for Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and his political allies has also reportedly contributed to friction among some party stakeholders.

There are further concerns about the treatment of certain political figures who previously supported Tinubu’s presidential ambition but now feel sidelined within the party.

These disagreements could complicate efforts to maintain a united campaign as the APC prepares for the 2027 elections.

Northern Political Support Remains Important

Northern Nigeria remains a major political region because of its population, geographical spread and influence on national elections.

While some political figures have expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election, reports of divisions among northern APC governors suggest that the President’s campaign may need to address internal disagreements within the party.

However, support for Tinubu is not uniform across the region, and political positions differ among governors, party leaders and other stakeholders.

The reported divisions do not necessarily mean that northern governors have collectively withdrawn their support for the President.

Monafrika’s Take

The reported tension within the APC highlights the challenges of maintaining party unity ahead of a major election.

For President Tinubu, support from governors and grassroots political structures will be an important part of his re-election campaign. Disagreements over party leadership, candidate selection and political influence could affect how effectively the party organises itself.

At the same time, claims of covert opposition and political sabotage require careful examination. Public statements, verifiable actions and official responses are needed to establish the true extent of the disagreements.

As the 2027 elections approach, the APC’s ability to manage internal differences will remain an important part of Nigeria’s developing political story.
