Government-aligned forces have regained control of Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, in the latest major development in the renewed conflict between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The TPLF confirmed that its forces had withdrawn from the city and said the regional administration would temporarily operate from another location.
The takeover represents a major setback for the TPLF, which launched a major offensive on September 23.
The renewed fighting is the most serious escalation since the 2020–2022 Tigray war and has raised concerns about a wider regional conflict.
Monafrika Watch: Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting forces fighting the government. Those countries deny the allegations. The claims should therefore be reported as allegations, not established facts.
