CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Africa’s push to increase trade between its own countries will take centre stage next month as business and political leaders meet in Cape Town to discuss the future of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene is expected to headline the Project Management Institute’s Global Summit Series in Cape Town on September 14 and 15.
The meeting will bring together leaders from government, business, technology, infrastructure, energy and development finance.
The discussions will focus on how Africa can improve regional integration and make it easier for businesses to operate across national borders.
The African Continental Free Trade Area was created to build a single African market and increase trade among African countries.
But businesses across the continent still face major challenges, including poor transport links, border delays, high logistics costs and different regulations between countries.
African leaders and business owners believe removing these barriers could help local companies reach bigger markets and reduce the continent’s dependence on imported goods.
The focus is also shifting towards digital trade, infrastructure and stronger regional value chains.
For small and medium-sized businesses, better implementation of AfCFTA could open the door to customers in other African countries without having to depend entirely on markets outside the continent.
The Cape Town summit will therefore come at an important time as Africa seeks to turn the promise of continental free trade into real opportunities for businesses and ordinary citizens.
