LOS ANGELES, United States — African music has reached another historic milestone as Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo becomes the first African musician to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The five-time Grammy Award winner was honoured in Los Angeles on Tuesday, August 18, in recognition of her long and influential career in music.
Kidjo received the 2,854th star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The honour makes her the first African musician and the first Black African artist to receive a Hollywood star.
For decades, Kidjo has used her music to bring African culture and stories to audiences around the world.
Her career has crossed borders and generations, making her one of Africa’s best-known musical ambassadors.
Hollywood also declared August 18 “Angélique Kidjo Day” in recognition of her contribution to music and culture.
The honour has been widely celebrated across Africa, particularly in her home country of Benin, where she remains a major cultural figure.
Kidjo’s achievement adds to a growing list of moments showing the increasing global influence of African music and entertainment.
From Afrobeats to African traditional music, artists from the continent continue to build audiences far beyond Africa.
For many young African musicians, Kidjo’s Hollywood recognition is more than a personal award. It is another reminder that African talent can take centre stage anywhere in the world.
