Tigray Fighting Escalates as Ethiopia Claims Strategic Town

Fresh fighting in northern Ethiopia is raising fears of another major conflict in the Tigray region.

Pro-government forces say they have captured Alamata, a strategic town south of Tigray’s regional capital, Mekelle.

Reuters verified video showing soldiers in Alamata, although the wider military situation remains fluid.

The renewed fighting comes despite the 2022 peace agreement that ended the previous two-year war between Ethiopian federal forces and the TPLF.

The International Committee of the Red Cross also said it evacuated 161 people from conflict-affected areas.

Monafrika Watch: The renewed fighting could create another humanitarian crisis in a region still recovering from the previous war.
