NIGER STATE — At least 47 farmers, most of them reportedly women, have been abducted from their farms in Rimi community, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
The farmers were reportedly working on their farms on Saturday, September 26, 2026, when armed groups arrived and took them away. The incident was reported by a local source and supported by a security report reviewed by AFP.
According to the reports, the victims were harvesting groundnuts when the abduction occurred. The attackers were reportedly operating on motorcycles and later moved the victims towards nearby forest areas.
A security report prepared for humanitarian organisations said armed groups entered the Mariga area from the direction of Zamfara State before spreading out towards different locations.
Victims’ whereabouts
A report cited by AFP said the abducted farmers were believed to have been taken towards the Ma’undu forest. It also reported that, at the time of the report, the attackers had not contacted the families or made a ransom demand.
These details remain reports and have not been independently confirmed by Nigerian security authorities.
The latest incident adds to continuing security concerns in Niger State, particularly in communities close to large forest areas.
Niger State has experienced several large-scale abductions in recent months. In September, police confirmed the abduction of an unspecified number of residents from Maburya in Mariga LGA, with military and police teams deployed for rescue operations.
MONAFRIKA SECURITY WATCH
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the safety of farmers in rural communities, where insecurity can disrupt farming activities and threaten food production.
Monafrika will continue to monitor developments, including any confirmation from the Niger State Government, police or security agencies on the status of the abducted farmers.
