GoldBod Faces Fresh Questions Over Alleged GH¢22bn Loss

Ghana’s Parliament has seen fresh debate over the financial operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), with the Minority demanding answers over an alleged loss of about GH¢22 billion.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says Ghanaians deserve a clear explanation of how public funds were used in the country’s gold purchasing programme.

He has questioned the financial figures surrounding GoldBod and called for greater transparency over its operations.

However, the GH¢22 billion figure has been disputed.

The Institute of Fiscal Policy Governance says GoldBod did not record a GH¢22 billion loss. It says the audited accounts instead show a GH¢5.44 billion surplus.

The disagreement has therefore shifted the focus to how GoldBod’s accounts and related costs are calculated and reported.

Afenyo-Markin has maintained that the Minority’s concerns are not politically motivated and that Parliament has a responsibility to seek answers on the management of public funds.

The controversy is likely to remain an important issue as calls grow for greater transparency around Ghana’s gold trade and the financial operations of GoldBod.
